  • Glucocorticoids (steroids) (prednisone, dexamethasone) – increase bone breakdown and reduce new bone formation.

  • Aromatase inhibitors (anastrozole, letrozole, exemestane) – reduce estrogen, accelerating bone loss.

  • Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) for prostate cancer (leuprolide, goserelin) – lowers testosterone, increasing bone loss.

  • Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) (omeprazole, pantoprazole) – long-term use may reduce calcium absorption and is associated with increased fracture risk.

  • Certain anti-seizure medications (phenytoin, carbamazepine, phenobarbital) – alter vitamin D metabolism, reducing calcium absorption.

  • Some immunosuppressive medications, especially when combined with steroids, may also affect bone health.

WHEN DENSITY MAY NOT TELL THE WHOLE STORY

Sometimes the Challenge Isn't Your Bones—It's How They're Measured.

Traditional DXA measures bone density using X-rays. In some situations, the result can be more difficult to interpret because factors other than healthy bone may influence the measurement.

REMS uses advanced ultrasound signal analysis to evaluate both bone density and bone quality, while reducing the impact of many non-bone artifacts.

Examples include:

  • Arthritis & Bone Spurs – Extra bone growth and osteoarthritis can artificially increase spine bone density, making bones appear stronger than they really are.

  • Degenerative Spine Changes – Age-related calcification, disc degeneration, and spinal wear can elevate DXA measurements without improving true bone strength.

  • Scoliosis – Curvature of the spine can make consistent positioning difficult, affecting the accuracy and comparison of repeat DXA measurements.

  • Previous Spine Surgery or Hardware – Metal implants and surgical changes may interfere with traditional X-ray measurements or make some areas impossible to evaluate.

  • Hip Replacement – An artificial hip cannot be measured by DXA, limiting assessment of that side and reducing the information available.

  • Petite Frame – Smaller bones naturally contain less mineral and can appear to have lower areal bone density on DXA because the measurement is influenced by bone size.
